Mississippi Megan's Law

Being named after Megan Kanka, Megan's Law was enacted into federal law in 1995. Megan's Law demands that each state develop a procedure for alerting the general public when a sexual offender is moves into their area.
Megan was merely seven years old when a previous sex offender that was living accross the street from her family, abducted, violently rapped, and killed her. It was decided that had her family or other community members had been aware that a previous sexual offender was housed in their community, this heinous act would have been prevented. With that in mind, the U.S. Congress enacted the "Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994", nicknamed Megan's Law, without any resistance.
Ever since the law was passed, Mississippi has gone out of its way to protect its citizens the most recent information relevant to past sex offenders and their current residency. The legislation has confirmed that while sexual assaults are still a danger in this country, offenses committed by prior offenders are on a decline.
The data accesible by the enactment of Megan's Law has proven to be a signifcant asset in keeping one's family guarded from the risk of sexual crimes.
