Mississippi Megan's Law

Named after Megan Kanka, Megan's Law was put into federal law in 1995. Megans Law demands that every state have a system in place for notifying the general public when a sexual offender is moves into their area.
Megan was merely seven years old when a previously convicted sexual predator that resided accross the street from her family, abducted, rapped, and murdered her. It was agreed that if her family or other residents in the communtiy had been alerted that a previous sexual offender was housed amongst them, this crime could've been avoided. On that train of thought, the U.S. Congress passed the "Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994", nicknamed Megan's Law, without any resistance.
Since the law was enacted, Mississippi has strived to protect its public by providing the most current information regarding previous sexual offenders and their whereabouts. The legislation has confirmed that though sexual assaults are still a danger in the U.S., crimes committed by previous offenders are on a downturn.
The data accesible by the enactment of Megan's Law has proven to be a critical asset in keeping one's family shielded from the dangers of sexual offenses.
