Mississippi Megan's Law

Being named after Megan Kanka, Megan's Law was put into federal law in 1995. Megans Law makes it mandatory for each state develop a procedure for notifying the general public when a sexual offender is relocated into their area.
Megan was only seven years old when a previously convicted sexual offender that resided accross the street from her family, kidnapped, violently rapped, and killed her. It was determined that had her family or other local residents had been aware that a previous sexual offender was housed in their neighborhood, this heinous act would have been avoided. With that in mind, the U.S. Congress passed the "Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994", nicknamed Megan's Law, without any objections.
