Mississippi Megan's Law

Named after Megan Kanka, Megan's Law was passed into federal law in 1995. Megan's Law requires that all states put a method in place for notifying the general public when a sexual offender is located in their area.
Megan was just seven years old when a repeat sexual predator that resided accross the street from her family, kidnapped, violently rapped, and murdered her. It was agreed that if her family or other local residents had been alerted that a repeated sexual offender was living amongst them, this crime would've been thwarted. With that in mind, the U.S. Congress legislated the "Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994", aka Megan's Law, without any protests.
Since the law was passed, Mississippi has made it a point to protect its offering the most current information relating to past sex offenders and their current residency. The law has shown that though sexual offenses are still a danger in the United States, offenses committed by prior offenders are on a decline.
