Mississippi Megan's Law

Being named after Megan Kanka, Megan's Law was put into federal law in 1995. Megans Law requires that each state develop a procedure for alerting local residents when a sexual offender is moves into their area.
Megan was merely seven years old when a previously convicted sex offender that resided accross the street from her family, kidnapped, rapped, and murdered her. It was determined that if her family or other community members had been alerted that a convicted sexual predator was living in their community, this assult would have been thwarted. With those thoughts, the U.S. Congress legislated the "Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994", aka Megan's Law, without any resistance.
Since the law has been passed, Mississippi has strived to protect its public by providing the most up to date information regarding convicted sexual offenders and their whereabouts. The law has proven that while sexual assaults are still a danger in the United States, offenses committed by prior offenders are on a regression.
