Mississippi Megan's Law

Getting its name from Megan Kanka, Megan's Law was put into federal law in 1995. Megans Law requires that each state put a method in place for informing the general public when a sexual offender is relocated into their community.
Megan was only seven years old when a previously convicted sex offender that lived accross the street from her family, abducted, violently rapped, and murdered her. It was concluded that if her family or other local residents had been alerted that a convicted sexual offender was housed in their neighborhood, this heinous act would've been avoided. On that train of thought, the U.S. Congress legislated the "Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994", nicknamed Megan's Law, without any opposition.
Ever since the law has been passed, Mississippi has gone out of its way to protect its offering the most up to date information relevant to previous sexual offenders and their current residency. The bill has confirmed that though sex crimes are still a occuring in the United States, offenses committed by previous offenders are on a decline.
The data attainable by the institution of Megan's Law has continued to be a critical asset in keeping one's family shielded from the risk of sexual crimes.
